He was predeceased by: his parents, Eddie Townsend and Ora Roberts Townsend; his children, Cynthia Elam, Lawrence Elam, Fred Townsend, Terry Townsend, Troy Townsend and Shirley Jean Elam; and his brothers, William Roberts, Nelson Roberts, Harry Townsend and Gary Townsend.
He is survived by: his wife Frances Townsend of Brookneal; his children, Preston Elam (Vena) of Brookneal, Sylvia Elam (Ricky) of Brookneal, Tracy Townsend of Brookneal, Sherina Terry of Brookneal, Ronnie Townsend (Audrey) of Lynchburg and Sherlita Davis (Dennis) of Red House; and his sister-in-law Pauline Townsend Callaham of Drakes Branch. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren.
