He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Wandless Armstrong and Margie Pauline Armstrong (Siron); and his brother Joseph Roscoe Armstrong. He is survived by: his wife Kathleen "Kitty" Funkhouser Armstrong; his children, Susan Thacker (Tom) of Weyers Cave, Gracie Armstrong Haines (Christopher Covert) of Charlottesville and Fred Armstrong of Goodview; his grandchildren, Kate Anderson, Andrew Thacker, Rebekah Armstrong, Bethany Gail, Skylar Haines, Adam Haines and Ivy Haines; and his great grandchildren, Natalie Anderson, Jack Anderson and Aurélia Robbins.
