He was predeceased by: his parents, Dabney Henry and Annie Wells Phillips; his spouse Carter Elizabeth "Betsy" Bevell Phillips; and his sister Adrean Phillips Taylor. He is survived by: his daughter Carolyn Phillips Overton; his son-in-law Wyatt "Chip" Overton; and his grandson Christopher Phillips Overton (Natalie Chrismer Overton).
