He was predeceased by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty" W. Koonce; his great-nephew John Grayson Chestnutt; and his parents, John Franklin Koonce Sr. and Sarah Thorpe Koonce. He is survived by: his brother Donald E. Koonce (Barbara); his great-nieces and great-nephews, David, Cara McDaniel, Amy, Jason Chestnutt, Ella McDaniel, Henry and William Chestnutt; his friend Candy Early; and his pet Magnum.
