He was predeceased by: his mother Sallie Osborne Nelms; and his siblings, Ralph Nelms, Wallace Nelms, Raymond Nelms, Herbert Nelms, Eula Nelms Peavy and Doris Nelms Langley.
He is survived by: his wife Joan Weaks Nelms; his sons, Len Nelms (Tammi) of Canton and David Nelms (Claire) of Bethlehem, Georgia; his stepchild Leigh Nelms Habecker (Nathan) of Lynchburg, Virginia; his grandchildren, Christian Nelms, Chloe Nelms, Avery Nelms, Luke Nelms, Harrison Nelms, Camille Nelms, Kelly Habecker, Andrew Habecker (Ashley) and Samuel Habecker; his great grandchild Collins Habecker; and his sister Christine Nelms Hartley of Macon. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
