He was predeceased by: his parents, Hilary Marsh Bowyer and Earle Davenport Bowyer; and his siblings, Shirley Bowyer, Esther Ashley and Robert W. Bowyer.

He is survived by: his wife Carleen Hanel Bowyer; his children, Wanda Mayhew (Patrick), Darlene Bowyer, Cynthia McClellan (David) and James R. Bowyer, Jr. (Tina); his sisters, Margaret Whorley and Elsie Laverne Mitchell (Marshall); and his siblings-in-law, Robert Lee Ashley and Delores Bowyer. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Friday, November 22nd 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service (1140 W Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, Bedford, VA 24523). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 23rd 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Updike Funeral Chapel (1140 W Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, Bedford, VA 24523). A burial will be held on Saturday, November 23rd 2024 at 3:00 PM at the Nicopolis Community Cemetery (1158 Nicopolis Dr, Bedford, VA 24523).
