He was predeceased by: his parents, Sanders Jackson Slate and Bertha Holt Slate; his wife Annie Slate; and his brother Allen Slate. He is survived by: his siblings, William "Bill" Slate, Lucille Whitlow and Linda Martin. He is also survived by eleven nieces and nephews.
