He was predeceased by: his parents, Jefferson Davis Scales, Sr. and Gladys Gates Scales; and his siblings, Rachel S. Barnes, Jasper S. Scales, John C. Scales, Jerry B. Scales and James W. Scales.

He is survived by: his sisters, Annie S. Tolbert, Daisy M. Barnard, Fay S. Young and Jane S. Fulk (Michael). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews.
