He was predeceased by: his parents, Alvis Reid and Rosetta Niten Lawson; and his brother Walter Lawson. He is survived by: his wife Vickie Dawn Tesh Lawson; his children, Anita (Tim Draughon), Jonathan (Dori Lawson), Heather Dellenger, Krystle (Danny Hardy), Bruce (Beth Shaw) and Tessa Lawson; and his siblings, Linda Quesenberry, Leonard (Rita Lawson), James (Nancy Lawson), Kenneth (Pam Lawson), Bernard "B. J." (Daune Lawson), Tom Lawson (Deb), Carlos Lawson, Dale Lawson, Lee (Dawn Lawson) and David (Dianne Lawson). He is also survived by eight grandchildren; one great grandchild.
