Susan Jo Morgan Cabler Obituary

Susan Jo Morgan Cabler passed away suddenly of an unexpected cardiac event on April 28, 2024. She was 65 years old. Susan is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Wallace H. (Hank) Cabler, Jr.

Born in Boston, MA in 1958, Susie was the daughter of William and Dorothy Morgan. She grew up with her younger brother Tom Morgan and sister Sarah Morgan Taylor in Sudbury, MA. Susan graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in 1976, where she played varsity basketball (they went to the state finals!) and varsity softball. Susan was a proud alumna of Purdue University. While there, she was awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

After college, Susan had an almost 14-year career as a pilot in the United States Air Force. She was one of the first female pilots in the 6th Military Airlift Squadron, her original assignment after pilot training. The bulk of her time was as an instructor aircraft commander in the Lockheed C-141 StarLifter, flying strategic airlift and air refueling missions to over 60 countries. In the early 90's, she flew over 600 hours in direct support of Operation Desert Storm.

Susan joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1996 and was currently serving as the Deputy Director of the Safety and Performance Integration Division of the FAA Aircraft Certification Service. She was also serving as a member of the FAA's Cybersecurity Steering Committee. Prior to her current position, Susan played a key role in post-accident reviews and return to service of the Boeing 737MAX fleet. Susan spent over 10 years as the Assistant Division Manager of the Aircraft Engineering Division, the national policy office governing requirements for all aircraft certification programs.

Her 20 years as a senior manager in the FAA left a lasting legacy of national airworthiness regulations and policy related to certification procedures for aircraft products and parts, individual and organizational designee and delegation programs, development of technical standards, NextGen communication, navigation and surveillance technologies, and the introduction of Safety Management Systems and risked-based decision tools for the FAA certification workforce.

Aunt Susie is survived by her thoroughly loved and loving nephews and nieces: Dr. Ben Taylor (Michela), Blaine Taylor (Emily), Adom Pond (Kiara), Billy Morgan, Dillon Morgan (Allie), and great niece Olivia Morgan. She is also survived by her brother Tom Morgan (Donna) and her sister Sarah Morgan Taylor (Herb).

A memorial service is being held for Susan at 11 AM on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Annandale VA. Susan loved her 2 miniature Poodles and will be dearly missed by Dabo and Dixie. She thought Poodles were the best and for those who want to share in honoring her, you could make a donation to your local Poodle rescue, Carolina Poodle Rescue (https://carolinapoodlerescue.org), or Florida Poodle Rescue.

Susan Rarus wrote a sympathy message

“To Susan's family, my deep sympathy to you all; Susan was always impressive in high school, she was exemplary in every way, and a good person; I very much admired her even then. Reading what she achieved professionally over her life, I'm not surprised.....but I had no idea that aeronautics was her interest, truly inspiring - so ahead of her time, so brave! Always she pursued excellence. I was so very sorry to learn of her untimely passing. She's a role model with a lasting legacy.”
