He was predeceased by: his parents, Hugo Lewis and Louise Ashworth Lewis; his son James Daniel Nelson III; his grandson Ethan James Lewis; and his siblings, Raeford Lewis, Norman Lewis, Joyce Payne and Marvin Lewis.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia Dixon Lewis; his children, Troy Neil Lewis of Norlina, Amy Lewis Hilliard (William) of Greenville, NC and Gregory Alan Nelson (Donna) of Alton; his grandchildren, Haylee Joplin Lewis, Sofia Lewis, Alexandra Shea Nelson, Fritz Lewis, Aaron Benton Hilliard, Evan Thomas Hilliard, Bradley Wyatt Nelson and Andrew Bryce Nelson; and his siblings, Claude Lewis (Nancy) of Sutherland, Rachel Poythress (Jerry) of Henderson, Linda Bishop (Jimmy) of Halifax and Glenn Lewis (Delores) of Bracey.
