He was predeceased by: his parents, John R. Murphy and Alice D. Murphy (Curley). He is survived by: his wife Patricia Downey of Dorchester; his brother Paul F. Murphy (Peg) of New Hampshire; his sons, John R. Murphy (Elizabeth) of Fairfax County and William G. Murphy (Christine); his grandchildren, Annie Hughes (Mathew), Kathryn Murphy of Fairfax County, John R. Murphy of New Mexico, Shannon Murphy and Avery Murphy (Dustin Bermudez) of Falls Church; and his stepgranddaughter Deanna Gaddis (Chad) of Camp Pendleton, California. He is also survived by three great granddaughters, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
