He was predeceased by: his father Gary Roger Howell Sr.; and his sister Laurie Lee Howell-Anderson. He is survived by: his mother Joan Clarabell Howell; his wife Elizabeth Richmond Howell; his children, Steven Roger Howell, Jonathan Paul Howell, Corrine Elizabeth Brown (Alex), Cameron Scott Howell, Laurie Carolyn Howell and Glen Alan Howell; and his granddaughters, Miriam Ellen Brown and Ruth Elizabeth Brown.

Gary had been suffering for many years from Alzheimer's disease.
