She is survived by: her husband Donald Jay Gates; her daughters, Debra O'Brien, Teresa Gallegos (George) and Robyn Jackson (Craig); her grandchildren, Crystal Curfew, Dasha Sommer, Kristopher Alires, Ryan O'Brien, Amber Murphy, Candace Gallegos, Crystal Shantell-Gallegos and Shelby Jackson; and her pet Tikie. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren.
Merlene joined the Ladies of the Elks Lodge Event Planning Committee where she devoted her time setting up holiday events, charity events and decorating for each of these events.
