He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph John Hicks Jr. and Hope Ione Labrum; and his sisters, Lulu Richins, Marva Deans and Cloe Brough.
He is survived by: his wife Janeil Hicks; his children, Joseph Ward Hicks (Peggy) and Sherlyn Griffin (Russell); and his siblings, Faun Allen, Bill Durfey (Dorthella) and Connie Durfey (Don). He is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
