He was predeceased by: his parents, Vaunda Smith and Blair Smith. He is survived by: his children, Nathan Jr. (Phyllis), Jeffery (Doreen), Pamela Grace (Kim), Russell (Yolanda) and Kristen Darling (David); his wife Joyce Carman-Smith; and his sister Barbara. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He went on to serve as the Dean of The School of Library Science for 11 years, making significant contributions to the field.
