He was predeceased by: his daughter Eva Irene Varela Acosta; and his brother Rafael Varela. He is survived by: his wife Maria Magdalena; his children, Joel Varela, Linda Leiva and Nancy Liufau (Don); and his siblings, Florentino Varela, Candido Varela, Soccoro Ayala and Angelita Molina. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
