He was predeceased by: his parents, Evva Tervort and Charles Bentley Merrill; and his brother Duane. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Howard; his children, Sherie Stewart Phillips (Tyler), Howard Merrill (Annie), Glenn Merrill and Melissa Payne (Roger); and his siblings, Diane Daniels, David and George. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
