He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Albert Thornton Birk and Mary Clinger of Virginia; his sisters, Diana, Janis and Joyce; his wife Janice Jenelle Miska; his children, Scott Birk (Julie) of Molalla, Oregon, Lisa Kowallis (Ron) of San Antonio, Texas, Amy Jenelle Birk of Orem, Utah, Jeff Birk (Brittany) of Draper, Utah and David Aaron Birk; his great grandchild Ashton Matthew Birk; and his grandson Jonathan Scott Birk. He was also cherished by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
