Rex left this world on August 12, 2024 at the age of 78, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl and Leona (Peterson). He is survived by: his wife Alice Carlson; and his children, Russel Carlson (Rebecca), Kasandra Taylor (Curtis), Piper Carlson, Grant Carlson (Emily) and Courtney Richardson (Seth). He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

One of the aspects of his position that he enjoyed most was personally visiting and thanking individuals who had made provisions in their wills for any remaining funds in their estates to be donated to the university, even when their funds had been exhausted.
