He is survived by: his siblings, Vesta, Craig, Brad and Chris; his former wife Irene Platt Nielsen; his children, James Nielsen (Heather), Jeremiah Nielsen (Keri), Madison McCoy (Jeffrey), Brigham Nielsen (Linda), Lydia Painter (Benjamin) and Eliza Nielsen; and his grandchildren, Aubrey, Ryker, Zerin, Mila, Macy, Jeremiah Maxwell, Calvin, James Paul, Josephine, Wallace, Tessa, Malcolm and Theodore.

“George was such a good friend. I will never forget the day the opposing female coach and her husband came to our sideline at the end of a soccer game. They wanted to fight me. I didn't know how I was going to get out of the situation. Just then there was literally a shadow that covered them. George gently pushed me to the side and said, as my assistant coach they would have to go through him first, and then he kindly advised them against it. Totally defused the situation.”
