He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Doherty and Mary Hopkins; and his daughter Alice Doherty. He is survived by: his wife Michele Sylvestro; his sons, James (Mary Jo), Sean (Chris) and Shannon (Tamara); and his grandchildren, Julia (Brett), Mary (Mike), Fiona (Austin), Tegan, Eamon and Tobin.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations be sent to Wounded Warrior Project.
