He was predeceased by: his stepdaughter Shelley Detton Leavitt (Daniel). He is survived by: his spouse Henny Somsen; his daughters, Lenise H. Capon Curtis and Lisa Henny Capon Douglas; and his stepchildren, Wendy Detton Seley (Tom), Morgan Detton, Scott Detton (Sue), Robin Detton Brown (Brett) and Terri-Lynne Detton Keene.
During the 2020 COVID pandemic, Alan was awarded his Certificate of Naturalization as a United States citizen in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 27, 2020. This was a huge accomplishment as the COVID pandemic sequestration policies kept delaying previous attempts of taking the Oath of the Pledge of Allegiance.
