He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Veda Merrill Hobbs and Albert Alfreda Hobbs; his siblings, Joy, Dwayne and Klis; his children, Heather Bernard and Brandon Hobbs; his grandchildren, Brayden and Bronson Bernard; his wife Susan Garrett; his stepchildren, Wyatt Garrett, Rachel Murray and Chelsea Tomlan; his stepgrandson Justin Sharp; his stepson Coach; and also Rachel Murray (Roger Murray).

In 2006 he was honored by the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation for his lifetime contribution to high school athletics.
