He was predeceased by: his parents, Leopoldo Serna and Guadalupe Serna; and his brother Ernesto Serna. He is survived by: his daughters, Esmeralda Serna and Alma Arroyo (Jose Luis); his grandchildren, Celeste Esparza, Luis Arroyo, Monserrat Esparza, Mia Sofia Esparza and Julian Arroyo; his siblings, Jesus Serna (Berta), Leopoldo, Victor Serna (Susana), Maria A. Cantu (Juan), Patricia, Maria Magdalena, Maria G. Benavides (Rudy), Delia De Leon (Angel), Yolanda and Blanca Cantu (Roberto); and his sister-in-law Estela Serna. He is also survived by numerous other family members and friends.
