He was predeceased by: his wife Doralisa Benavides Vela; his parents, Carmen Garcia Vela and Adrian Vela; and his siblings, Corando Vela and Celinda Vela Guzmán.
He is survived by: his children, Marissa Vela Pérez (Servando) of Austin, Alvaro Adrian Vela (Judi) of Corpus Christi and Dina Vela Cuéllar (Mary Saenz) of San Antonio; his sisters, Enriqueta Vela and Imelda Vela Coronado (Joe); and his grandchildren, Jaqueline Vela Roussel (Zachary), Roberto Vela, Adriana Pérez, Alejandro Pérez, Andrés Vela and Olivia Cuéllar. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.
