He was predeceased by: his parents, P. C. Mitchell and Mary Mitchell (Jenkins); and his sister Zelda Comer. He is survived by: his wife Sylvia Wright; his daughter Cindy Stephens (Steve); his grandchildren, Chelsey Groves and Seth Stephens (Julie); his son Kevin Mitchell (Tammy); his grandchildren, Mikka James (Chris), Shea Askew (Brady), Morgan Saint (Jeff), Hailey Hogg (Cody) and Merritt Hammonds (Preston); his siblings, Martha Hutcheson of Wolfforth and Bill Mitchell (Elaine) of Lubbock; and his siblings-in-law, Yvonne Heath of Lubbock and Mike Wright (Tina) of Wolfforth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in memory of James to the New Home Baptist Church.
