He was predeceased by: his parents, W. A. Atkinson (Shorty) and Odessa Atkinson; his wife Betty; and his brothers, James, Kenneth and Frank.
He is survived by: his children, Billy Atkinson (Carol) of Brock and Kathy Howell (Rick) of Brock; his grandchildren, Brad Atkinson (Chelsea) of Amarillo, Carolyn Grimmett (Chad) of San Angelo, Wes Howell (Katy) of Falls City and Kailey King (John) of Brock; his siblings, L. B. Atkinson (Barbara), Wilburn Atkinson (Joyce) and Donna Rials; and his sisters-in-law, Shirley Pribble and Barbara McCarthy. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
