He was predeceased by: his parents, Clifton Houston Bates and Corinne Pruet Bates; and his siblings, Harold Edwin Bates, Clifton Edward Bates, Jeffrey Dan Bates and Dorothy Jean Bates Galvin.
He is survived by: his wife Carole Jan Lynch Bates; his children, Laura Lucille Bates Hodge (DeWain) of Waxahachie and Lawrence "Larry" Elliott Bates (Andrea) of Houston; and his grandchildren, Amanda Hodge Altamirano (Mario), Melanee Hodge (Mike), Courtney Hodge Langford (Chris), Ashley Hodge Darden (Brandon), William Russell Bates and Hannah Elise Bates. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
