He was loved and cherished by many people including: his mother Fannie Elizabeth Tilghman; his wife Mary James of Valley View; his children, Terry James Shepard, Tammy James Forsythe and Danny; his daughter-in-law Beth James; his siblings, Barbara Perkins (Lenny), Linda Landers (David) and Jimmy Forest; his siblings-in-law, Bill Webb (Lynne), Bud Webb (Vonda), Paul Todd (Tami), Don Todd (Tresea), Ron Todd (Marlene) and Bonnie Allen; his mother Fannie James; his son Duane Shepard; his granddaughter Shannon Simmons; his siblings-in-law, Al Allen and Betty Chambers; his grandchildren, Clinton Shepard (Jennifer), Brandon Shepard (Jamie), Justin James (Casie), Kandy Shepard Thurston and Amber Cheek (Cole); and his great grandchildren, Coleton, Wyatt, Nicolas, Meghan, Grace, Noah, Austin, Kimber, Sydney, Alex, Logan, Jordan, Hunter, Olivia, Tristan, Chloe and Cori. He was also cherished by six grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
