He was predeceased by: his parents, Tommy T. Thompson and Maydean Milner Thompson; and his brother Roy Thompson. He is survived by: his son Richard Lee Thompson, II; his daughter-in-law Jennifer Thompson; his granddaughters, Jesika Smitherman, Tanner Thompson and Trinity Thompson; and his siblings, Bob Thompson, Lonnie Thompson, Steve Thompson, Betty Kidwell, Connie Alsup and Linda Jobe.
