He was predeceased by: his parents, Travis H. Key, Sr. and Edna Perkins Key; and his wife Edith Ann Steinert. He is survived by: his children, Amy Kirk (Kyle) of Troy, James Ray Key, Jr. (Isabella) of Temple and Terry Dean Key of Temple; his grandchildren, Sophia Key, Jaiden Kirk, Dillyn Sneed and Rylan Key; and his great grandchild Luna Sneed.
