He was predeceased by: his parents, Jerald Blakely Rutland and Gladys Pugh Rutland of Virginia. He is survived by: his wife Patricia Ann Rutland; his daughters, Jessica Lynn Rutland and Abigail Rutland of Virginia; and his sisters, Kimberly Belken, Linda (Glen Harris) and Amy (Joe Hinkle). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
