He was predeceased by: his parents, Irene Hodges and William Thomas Hillis; his daughter Gretchen Hillis; and his siblings, Billetta Richmond and Keith Hillis.

He is survived by: his sons, Bruce Hillis Jr. of Temple and Russell Hillis of Troy; and his sister Roberta Lowe. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
