He was predeceased by: his father Lester Tomei; his grandparents, Edmardo, Velma Tomei, Leo and Ann Hankerd; and his brother David Tomei.
He is survived by: his mother Elizabeth Tomei (Hankerd) of Las Cruces; his children, Ryan Joseph Tomei (Alexandra) and Erin Ashley Tomei of Taylor, Texas; his wife Cindy Tomei; his granddaughters, Kenna, Riley and Grace of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his sisters, Patty Wendt (Rick) of Temple, Texas, Carol Salopek (James) of Las Cruces and Jan Mueller (John) of McKinney, Texas; and his siblings-in-law, Mark Kruse (Remona), Pam David (Mike) and Brian Kruse (Shannon). He is also survived by numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
