He was predeceased by: his parents, James Matthews and Virgie Davis Matthews; and his sons, James William Matthews and Robert Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Carolyn; his children, Kathy Harrelson (Brad), Lauri Matthews, Juliann Berry (Brendan), Jimmy Matthews (Sara) and Jerry Matthews; and his brothers-in-law, John Curry (JoAnn) and Jerry Curry (Barbara). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and their spouses; 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, Second Baptist Sick Children's Clinic or Buckner Children's Home in memory of Dr. James R. Matthews.
