He is survived by: his wife Maria Concepcion Varela; and his children, Jose Ternando Varela, Noe Varela, Raul Varela, Maria Guadalupe Varela Varela, Angeles Varela Varela, Micaela Varela Varela and Rosa Elena Melendez.
