He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Douglas Hutton Sr. and Rebecca Kay Riffey (Durham); his children, Dr. Katherine Schaefer and David Riffey; the mother of his children Teresa Riffey; and his sisters, Loura Shamblee and Susan Kimble.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).
