He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe and Lillian; and his son-in-law Rick Peters. He is survived by: his wife Janie Ashmore; his children, Joseph Ellis Ashmore, III (Karen Ashmore), Gary Michael Ashmore, Mary Elaine Ashmore and Lori Ashmore Peters; his grandchildren, Alexa Marie Peters and Luke Donald Peters; his daughter Lucy Ferguson; and his siblings, Frank Joseph Ashmore, Sr. (Edna Ashmore) and Jeanne Ashmore Doxey (Adrian "Buddy" Doxey). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Joe continued in private practice until COVID, at which time he began limiting his time at the office.
