He was predeceased by: his wives, Dolores K. Paulick Schaefer and Doris Betz Schaefer; his daughter Carol Ann Stevenson; and his parents, Wilbert Schaefer and Clementine Gilroy Schaefer.

He is survived by: his sons, James Schaefer and Joseph Schaefer (Gisele).
