He was predeceased by: his parents, Connie Dorthelia Cates and Vernon Odell Cates; and his brother Vollie Glen Cates. He is survived by: his daughter Shauna Seale (Graham Seale); his grandchildren, James Aidan McClain, Addison McClain and Wyatt Seale; his sister Kim Charles (Malott Charles); his niece Melissa Thomas; his great-nephews, Nicholas and Jackson Thomas; his niece Marcie Cates; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Riley and Taylor Patterson; his nephew Dusty Cates; and his great-nephew Colton Cates. He is also survived by many extended family and friends.
