He was predeceased by: his parents, Lafayette Brown Herring and Fredeen Beaird Herring; his brother Lafayette Brown Herring; and his wife Helen "Polly" Chapman Herring. He is survived by: his daughter Lucy Herring Chambers (Samuel Thomas Chambers); his granddaughters, Alice Marion Chambers and Sallie Linden Chambers; his children, Fred Deen Herring Jr. (Melisa Billingsley Herring) and Hilary Herring Smith (Paul Nugent Smith); his grandchildren, Paul Nugent Smith Jr., Henry Gardner Smith and Evelyn Iverson Smith; and his friend Pene Pettit Moore.
