He was predeceased by: his father Thomas Roper; his stepfather Mack McDow; and his brother Larry Roper. He is survived by: his mother June Sanders Roper McDow; his wife Sharon Roper; his son Stephen Pitts (Julia); his grandchildren, Brandon Pitts, Brianna Pitts and Brooke Pitts; and his siblings, Jerry Roper (Pat) and Cathy Pickens (Russell). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
