He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles B. Schmidt, Sr. and Mary Gunning Schmidt; his stepmother Alma Ries Schmidt (Beth Cryar Schmidt); his wife Marcia Thurman; his daughter Sarah Ann Schmidt; and his grandson Brian Owens.

He is survived by: his daughters, Susan Schmidt Greenwade (Ron) and Mary Charlotte Owens (Steve); his grandsons, Chad Gomez, Kevin Owens (Kelly), Keelan Greenwade and Alan Greenwade (Duna); and his great grandchild Lyndron White.
