He was predeceased by: his son Victor Vela; his parents, Jesus Vela and Porfiria Vela; and his siblings, Bridget Vela, Celia Delgado, Lupita Alvarado, Anastacia Gonzalez, Reynaldo Vela and Gilberto Vela.

He is survived by: his wife Janice Marie Vela; his children, Jo Egly Griffith (Denny Joe), Belinda Vela, Leticia Gonzalez, Gloria Vela, Emilio Vela Jr. (Yvette) and Lydia Macheska (Robert); and his siblings, Maria Salazar, Jesus "Jesse" Vela Jr. and Carlos Vela. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
