He was predeceased by: his mother Bessie Smith Gates; his wife Patricia Ann Gamble Gates; and his brother Hoss Gates. He is survived by: his children, John Charles Gates, Jr. and Charlene Denise Elliott; and his grandchildren, Ethan Dane Elliott, Bethany Grace Gates and Kallen Lain Elliott. He is also survived by other loving family members and friends.
