He is survived by: his spouse Barbara L. Backer (MacDonald); his parents, Horst Backer of Bellingham and Isberga Backer (Roth) of Bellingham; his children, Tanya Backer of Roslindale, Cheri Backer, Jason Morales of Wakefield, Alexandra Fontaine, Angela Bumpus of Tiverton, RI, Gregory Fontaine of Brighton and Jonathan Backer of California; and his siblings, Enrico Backer (Maureen) of Bellingham and Roy Backer of Bellingham. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, Dietmar's family would prefer that donations in his memory be made to the Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary, 37 Eddy St., Norton, MA 02766.
