He was predeceased by: his parents, Arnold Leonard and Annabell Elster; his siblings, Harold, Allen, Glen Elster and Dorothy Everett; his brothers-in-law, Joe Losack and Owen Borchardt; and his grandson Christian Matthews.

He is survived by: his wife Ruth Elster; his children, Michael Joseph Elster (Tina) and Kimberly Ann Matthews (Patrick); his siblings, David Elster, Margie Borchardt and Barbara Losack; his siblings-in-law, Annette, Dorothy, Helene Elster and Wayne Everett; and his grandchildren, Hannah Elster, Grace Ann, Connor, Ellee and Elizabeth Matthews. He is also survived by family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to First English Lutheran Church in Damon.
