He was predeceased by: his parents, Eula Shockley and Joe Merchant; his parents-in-law, Franky and Joe Barrow; his sisters, Clarissa (Sidney Cooper) and Melba (Gerald Thomas); his sister-in-law Peggy Barrow May; and his nephew Russell May.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Barrow Merchant; his daughter Jani Leigh (Randy Burnett) of Mt. Pleasant; his granddaughter Jessica Lewis of Huntsville; his brother-in-law Decker May; and his nieces and nephews, Erma Horne, Sidney, Ginny Cooper, Dan, Jeanette Thomas, Pat, Nick Dyke, Robin and Rev John Stone. He is also survived by many other great nieces and nephews, cousins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the merchant Scholarship Fund, Office of Development, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas 77342; contributions can also be made to the cemetery fund for Nevill's Chapel Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.
