He was predeceased by: his father Mrs Edward Clem. He is survived by: his wife Michele Clem; and his stepson Cory Hughes (Anna Mendoza). He is also survived by his family and his co-workers.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be sent to one of Joel's favorite charities: The Tony Foundation for Cancer; Tunnel to Towers, or Wounded Warriors.
